Luke Donald was proud of his confidence-boosting win at the Madrid Masters as he prepares for the US Open at Pebble Beach (66/1 to win US Open).
The Englishman had not won a tournament for four years but saw off the challenge of Welshman Rhys Davies to win by one shot at the Real Sociedad Hipica Espanola Club de Campo.
The pair were locked together at 16-under par going into the final round but a superb eagle at the 16th to Davies’ birdie gave Donald a one-shot lead with two to play, and he maintained that lead to claim the title.
The 32-year-old was in contention for the PGA Championship at Wentworth last week but blew his chances during the final round and Sunday’s victory in Spain helped soften the blow of losing out on Europe’s flagship event.
“It’s been a while since I won and to put last week behind me makes me very proud,” he said.
“The way I played means a lot to me. The eagle was huge because Rhys put a lot of pressure on me.
“It’s happiness and relief – definitely some relief.”
The US Open begins on June 17 and Donald will hope to maintain the form that has seen him climb to ninth in the world rankings.
Tiger Woods is scheduled to play at Pebble Beach - one of his favourite venues - and is the 6/1 favourite to win his 15th major, with great rival Phil Mickelson on offer at 13/2.
There are a number of top Europeans in form at present, which augurs well for the Ryder Cup (Europe 8/11f to win), with Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington both available at 16/1 to win the US Open.
